YSSR Celebrates 40 Years of Lifesaving Service and Recognizes Outstanding Members

By Uncategorized

Oromocto, December 9th, 2023 – In a heartfelt ceremony attended by local MLAs Hon. Mary Wilson and David Coon, RCMP officers, Emergency Measures Organizations officials, local businesses, and even past subjects of their rescues, York Sunbury Search and Rescue marked its 40th-anniversary milestone. The event was a reflection on four decades of dedicated service and recognition of exemplary individuals within the team.

Two standout members, Kenn Hong and George Derrah, were honored for their exceptional contributions. Kenn was bestowed with the prestigious Life Member award and recognized for an impressive 37 years of unwavering service. Meanwhile, George, a founding member, received acclaim for an extraordinary 40 years of commitment to the team, symbolizing a lifetime dedicated to search and rescue efforts.

Kenn’s Life Member award was presented by his daughter, Jade, who also serves as a member of the team. In a touching tribute, she shared anecdotes of being born during a major fundraising event and the unique challenges of growing up with a father dedicated to search and rescue. The ceremony underscored the familial bonds and personal sacrifices made by the team members in their pursuit of serving the community.

As a non-profit organization run entirely by volunteers, York Sunbury Search and Rescue relies on

community support and fundraising to sustain its critical operations. The team has demonstrated outstanding dedication, with members collectively volunteering time equivalent to nearly $750,000 in search efforts alone over the past decade. This figure excludes the additional contributions made to training, equipment maintenance, prevention, and community outreach. Anyone wishing to join the team can learn more on our website

“Our team’s achievements are a testament to the extraordinary individuals who selflessly devote their time to our cause,” said Daniel Fairbanks, York Sunbury Search and Rescue President. “We extend our gratitude to our community and the remarkable individuals who choose to stand beside us in ensuring the safety and well-being of our region.”

York Sunbury Search and Rescue expresses profound appreciation for the ongoing support of its community and the exceptional volunteers who continue to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

2021 Year in Review

By UncategorizedNo Comments

2021 was a year of adjusting to the “new normal” and learning how best to fulfill our mission and mandates under new, ever-changing circumstances. Our team worked hard to adapt, seeking out new ways to train our members, fundraise, and connect with our community.

Member Highlight: Dave and Michelle Blanchard

The start of June kicks off our Families of YSSR highlight series! Some folks just love being part of the team so much they pull their partners, siblings, or kids into joining as well. Starting off the month we have power couple Dave and Michelle Blanchard.

Dave joined the team in 2017 and has been a dedicated member ever since. With more than 30 years of military service in both armoured corps and administration, Dave has a wealth of knowledge and experience that he uses to help lead our team’s training, administrative, and operational activities. Dave is a Field Team Leader, an Electronic Search Specialist, a Command Post driver, and is trained in Low Angle Rescue. He was also our Vice President for 2019 and 2020.

Michelle joined the team in 2018 after a long history of working in long term care homes, palliative care units, and volunteering with the Alzheimer’s Society and Crime Stoppers. In her words, she joined YSSR because she needed a “fun” hobby, and has spent her time since using her enormous amounts of drive and energy helping our team thrive. Michelle is a trained searcher, an Electronic Search Specialist, and the Fundraising Commitee Chair for 2021.

Member Highlight: John and Shantelle Leslie

By Member HighlightsNo Comments

This week we want to highlight two of our much-appreciated members – John and Shantelle Leslie. This month marks John and Shantelle’s 11th year volunteering with YSSR!

Shantelle wrote a lovely message, so I’ll let her tell it in her own words:

“We love helping our community and are proud to be a part of this great team of volunteers. We have learned new skills and made lots of new friends. It can be challenging to balance family and volunteering, but we’re able to work it out together and it’s good to have the support from each other and our families.”

“I know what it’s like to be on the side of a family missing someone; when I was a teenager, I remember SAR being involved in a search for a missing young girl that was with my sister at the time she was taken. This was very close to home and wished I could help more, so when the opportunity came when i was older I joined YSSR, hoping I can help families like they helped us so long ago.”

John and Shantelle lead by example; their kindness, thoughtfulness, and dedication make them stand out from the crowd. We’re lucky to have them!
